Student ID cards available in the library

To obtain your Indian Hills Community College staff or student ID card, come to the IHCC Library on either campus. If it's the first time you are obtaining an Indian Hill's ID card, be sure to bring a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, or military ID card with you. You must be registered for classes before you can obtain a student ID. Students should print a copy of their class schedule and bring it with them to facilitate the process. The first Indian Hills Community College student ID card is free but there is a $10.00 replacement fee for lost cards.

It's time to schedule library instruction sessions for spring term classes

The library staff would like to remind faculty that they can start scheduling their library instruction sessions for their classes now, for the spring term. Students have already begun registering for spring classes, and the library staff is taking reservations for instructors to bring their classes to the library to learn about all the wonderful resources available in-house and on the web.

Most sessions introduce students to the Indian Hills card catalog and a number of databases including a full range of areas covered by the EBSCO database, as well as e-books and audio books available for download, and the Films on Demand collection.

Although the majority of the classes are research-based such as Composition and Speech, the library staff will tailor a session to meet your course needs. Contact the IHCC Library by phone at 641 683-5199 or by e-mail, library@indianhills.edu to arrange for your session.

Well things are starting to settled back down after Christmas Break. Students are getting back into their routine now that midterms are over. Now I just need to figure out what we are going to do for bookclub this month. The selection for the month is Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. I need to sit down and figure out the selections for the coming months.

May/Junes Book Club

The IHCC book club met on June 2, 2010. We discussed the book titled "The Devil in the White City." One member really enjoyed the book. Some did not want to finish the book and a few could take it or leave it. There were two main subjects in this book that were connected by Chicago and the fair. The Chicago World's Fair and the items that were first introduced at the fair were discussed.
The Devil-H. H. Holmes was an early serial killer. He preyed on women who were coming to Chicago to the fair. He was a ladies man and would invite them to his boarding house/hotel which was constructed with a torture and gas chambers and a chute to send the bodies to the basement where he could burn them.
We also discussed what we would be reading this summer. Book Club will meet in September to discuss what we have read over the summer and pick up copies of the "All Iowa Reads" selection.

May-Book Club Selection

The final book club selection for the academic year will be The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
This book for is a story of murder, magic and madness at the fair that changed America, the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. In The Devil in the White City, Larson tells the spellbinding true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were linked by the Greatest Fair in American History, The Chicago World's Fair of 1893, Nicknamed, "The White City."
The architect, Daniel Hudson Burnham, was the builder of many of the country's most important structures including Union Station in Washington, D.C. He worked with Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim and Louis Sullivan to transform swampy Jackson park into a dream city by the lake for the World's Fair.
The murderer, Henry H. Holmes, built his "World's Fair Hotel" (a torture palace with dissection table, gas chamber and crematorium) just west of the fairgrounds in Chicago. Holmes used the attraction of the World's Fair and his own satanic charm to lure scores of young women to their deaths. Real-life characters including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others all play a role in this novel, based on a true story.

Celebrate National Library Week at the Indian Hills Community College Library April 11-17. It's National Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide. The Indian Hills Community College Libraries are celebrating National Library Week with book displays, drawings, and refreshments on Thursday.Libraries are the heart of every community and our library helps our Indian Hills community thrive. People of all backgrounds come together for study groups, books, journals, newspapers, music CD's, DVD's, videos, to do research with the assistance of a trained professional, and to get help with any reference questions.First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. The Indian Hills Community was asked to stop by the library to register for prizes, enjoy some refreshments on Thursday, and check out our displays and new books.
The Centerville Campus gave IHCC totebags every day during Nat'l Library week. Inside each was a USB drive, an electric eraser, an IHCC keychain, earphones, and an IHCC koozie.

IHCC Libraries will be closed for the holidays

The libraries on the Ottumwa and Centerville campus' will be closing at 9:00 p.m. Thursday December 17th. The libraries will remain closed until Monday January 4th when they open at 7:15 a.m. For students working on papers during break are reminded they can access the online databases 24/7/365. If you are needing the passwords to the databases, you can access these by logging into your account on myHills. On your homepage there is a link for the user name and passwords. Students can also access e-books from the library card catalog. Remember to set up an account first. The account needs to be setup when you are on campus.

Library celebrates the holidays with unusual tree

Kathy came across this idea several years ago when researching different decorating ideas for the library. This is the third time the library has created a book tree. The library work-study students started this project last week and put the finishing touches on it Tuesday (1st).

Do you own an MP3 player and wish you could download books to listen to while walking, jogging or riding your bike this summer? Check out WILBOR.

Now you can check out audiobooks from your library at your home or office! As part of the WILBOR consortium, the IHCC Library offers audiobooks for its students and staff to download and listen. Your student/staff ID number is the “key” to downloading the audiobooks, from any computer that is connected to the Internet, at any hour of the day. From a website you can browse or search for a title you’d like to listen to, log in with your student/staff number plus a 0 (zero) on the end of the number, and download the title to your computer. You can then listen to the book on your computer, or transfer to an mp3 player to listen.
“This is a great way to make the library’s resources available to our users 24/7/365,” said Librarian Cheryl Talbert. “You don’t have to come to the library building to check out the audiobook, and you don’t have to return it. The book automatically “returns” to the collection for someone else to borrow.”
WILBOR's collection has fiction and nonfiction titles, as well as books for children and teens. Bestsellers and classics, history and humor, business and self help--you'll find them all in WILBOR. Books will check out for 1 week and the file will "expire" on your computer after 1 week, but when the books are transferred to a portable player you can listen to them at your leisure. Some titles can even be burned to CDs for your own, personal use. Most of the current titles are in wma format but WILBOR recently started purchasing MP3 formats as well, which can be transferred to iPod players.
The IHCC Library is one of 84 libraries in western, central, and southern Iowa that participate in WILBOR. IHCC Library Book Club wraps up the 2008-2009 school year

The IHCC Library Book Club had its final meeting of the school year on Wednesday May 27th at noon in the library. We discussed the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

The book club will begin meeting again September 16 where we will discuss the books we read this summer. We will be reading the book The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown for our October meeting. This book was selected as the All Iowa Reads Book for 2009 for the Iowa Center for the Book. Indian Hills is having their annual foundation auction this Saturday April 25, 2009 at their North Campus located at the Ottumwa Industrial Airport. The library will be setting up their usual book booth and will sell books during the auction. The doors open at 9:00 a.m. with the auction starting at 10:00a.m. On Thursday several members of the basketball team stopped by and helped Cheryl load the books heading for the auction in the back of a trailer being driven by Dave Talbert, Instructor for the Criminal Justice program.

Donald Harstad to visit the Ottumwa campus library

The library on the Ottumwa campus will be hosting a booktalk with Iowa Author Donald Harstad on Wednesday April 16, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Harstad is a former deputy sheriff in Clayton County, Iowa. His novels feature Carl Houseman, a sensible deputy sheriff in fictional Nation County, Iowa. This internationally published series features many local haunts that you will recognize, and is reknowned for good, solid descriptions of police work.

The small display case located in the library features..."A New Year...A New YOU!!!" It showcases DVD's Video's and books to help you with a nutritious diet and exercise program. One of the DVD's is a cardio exercise tape with the "Dancing with the Stars" dancers- Maksim. Ashli, and Kym. Marie Osmond claimed to have lost 4" from her waist while dancing with this show and it might just work for you!

Multi-Cultural Story Time

The next Multi-Cultural story time will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19 in the formal lounge on the Ottumwa campus. During February, the story time will focus on African Americans.

Bring your lunch and join the IHCC Book Club. The group will meet in the library on the Ottumwa campus once a month to promote reading and discuss various books.

The next meeting will be January 23, 2008. We will be reading the book "It's okay to miss the bed on the first jump and other life lessons I learned from dogs" written by John O'Hurley.

"THE LOFT" now open

"The Loft" located above the library is now open for business. The second floor of the library was transformed into a cool quiet study area and audio visual area. The library has moved all the audio tapes, audio books, DVD's, video tapes, compact discs to the second floor along with a stereo and a television and VCR/DVD player. The loft will be staffed by students and you will be able to check out audio visual items upstairs. Check it out today!!

Banned Book Week September 29-October 6, 2007

The library on the Ottumwa Campus will be celebrating banned book week with a display of challenged or banned books of 2006. The American Library Association is celebrating the 26th annual Banned Book Week with the theme "Ahoy! Treasure Your Freedom to Read and Get Hooked on a Banned Book." Banned books week is observed during the last week of September each year. Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. The most challenged book of 2006 is the book "And Tango makes three" by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. The book is about two male penguins parenting an egg from a mixed-sex penguin couple.
